No agreement in Gaza ceasefire talks in Cairo; process to continue, sources say – https://www.reuters.com/world/middle-east/hamas-says-it-rejects-new-israeli-conditions-gaza-ceasefire-talks-2024-08-25/

Hamas' stand that it would not agree to bridging over the ' not agreed' to previous conditions and insisting on following the plan previously backed by the US President Joe Biden have necessiated further talks. Israel is not ready to withdraw soldiers, particularly from the Philadelphi corridor - a narrow land strip adjoining Gaza Strip and Egypt. It is necessary to assuage the fears and resistance to such conditions, and constant diplomatic dialogue is the only way to move forward.

The Philadelphia Corridor

The Philadelphia Corridor in the Gaza Strip refers to a narrow strip of land along the Egyptian-Gazan border, approximately 14 kilometers (8.7 miles) long and 100-200 meters (330-660 feet) wide. It is also known as the “Philadelphi Route.”

Some key points about the Philadelphia Corridor:

1. Buffer zone – The corridor was established in 1994 as a buffer zone between Gaza and Egypt.
2. Israeli control – Until 2005, the corridor was controlled by Israel, which used the corridor to monitor and restrict the movement of people and goods between Gaza and Egypt.
3. Tunnels and smuggling – The corridor has been used for tunnel construction and smuggling, with many tunnels dug under the corridor to transport goods, weapons, and people.
4. Egyptian control – In 2005, Israel transferred control  to Egypt. Egypt has since then maintained a military presence there to prevent smuggling and terrorism.
5. Gaza blockade – The corridor is an important part of the Gaza blockade, with Egypt and Israel restricting the movement of people and goods in and out of Gaza.

The Philadelphia Corridor has played a significant role in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and the political and economic situation in Gaza.
