Today, we will take a view of the young life of Greta Thunberg, who has been in the limelight from last several years.
At the energetic and creative age of twenty plus, where perceptions can be acted with required strength and determination to correct the wrongs, she must not let her vision and perceptions erode by directionless energy flow.
Jair Bolsonaro, the ex-president of Brazil, called her ‘Brat’. Russian President Putin kindly tried to illuminate her by describing her as a ‘kind, but poorly informed teenager’. Broadcaster Julia Hartley-Brewer has to delete her adjectives ridden tweet that announced her as a half-educated, autistic, doom-mongering eco-cultist! And,the big talker Donald Trump, the ex-president of the US, mocked her tweeting by saying – “Greta must work on her anger management problem…chill Greta, chill!”
Controversial British – American kickboxing Andrew Tate sarcastically tried to illicit a response from her, listing his 33 cars and offering to send to her their huge emissions details!
influences denied her Nobel Prize year after years, but she kept herself evolving.
Her father said that when she was eight years old, she stopped talking and stopped going to school.
She was diagnosed with Asperger’s Syndrome, a neurobiological disorder named after Austrian physician Hans Asperger who first described its symptoms in 1944.
“Being different is a gift”, She told BBC. “It makes me see things from outside the box. I don’t easily fall for lies. I can see through the things. I’d have been like everyone else, I wouldn’t have started (this) school strike, for instance. The strike she was talking about took place when she was fifteen.
The Asperger’s Syndrome she is suffering from, hardly affects intelligence or communication and language skills. Though marked by abnormal social interactions! people get more focused on a single thought or idea.
GRETA THUNBERG
♦️Part- 2
The First Act : It was in 2018, when Greta was just 15 years old. It was a ‘Solo’ act showing how mentally prepared she was! and what thought process must have initiated in her mind before taking the step.
A 15 year old school girl skips school and sits in front of Swedish parliament every Friday with a placard reading ‘SCHOOL STRIKE FOR CLIMATE’ & urging political leaders to align with environmental goals set in Paris agreement soon spread all over the world.
Her protest gained momentum, inspiring students globally to participate in what became known as “Fridays for Future.” The tremendous awareness these ‘Fridays for future ‘ generated in one upcoming generation is perhaps unparalleled in environmental campaign history. Thousands of students across the world began joining her in weekly climate strikes. The effect she achieved worldwide in no time made her a teenage sensation. Media across the world promoted her activity for global environmental awareness and made her ‘environment icon’. World leaders, global environmental organizations, NGOs, Educational institutions recognize her contribution in spreading awareness.
It was her outlook that afterward shifted her agitation correctly to hold political leaders responsible for the environmental debacle. In fact, many environmental organizations unconsciously or deliberately turned a blind eye towards the political apathy towards the environment.
She used the international stage boldly and never flinched or shown any nervousness in criticizing world famous international leaders in front of diplomats, officials her grandfather’s age.
December 2018 – UN COP24, Poland: Greta addressed the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP24) in Katowice, Poland, where she criticized world leaders over their lack of action on the issues concerning climate change.
This speech brought her international attention. She used the international stage deftly to promote her aim and to spread environmental awareness.
The massive publicity she and her speeches did what last ten years environmental campaign could hardly achieve. There were global climate strikes against governments public apathy and neglect of environmental issues. Slowly, her active groups in different countries started to act as pressure groups to effect changes in environmental policies.
3.In January 2019, World Economic Forum, Davos saw Greta attend the WEF and delivered a powerful speech where she famously stated, “Our house is on fire.”
In March 2019, Greta was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize for her environmental work.
In May 2019 Greta addressed the European Parliament and the British Parliament, emphasizing the urgency of action and challenging the complacency of political leaders.
In August 2019 , to attend the UN Climate Summit in New York, Greta refused to fly (due to aviation’s carbon footprint) and instead traveled across the Atlantic on a zero-emission yacht.
This journey garnered significant global attention.
4. September 2019 saw Her most famous outburst in the UN Climate Action Summit (New York) speech.
Greta gave one of her most famous speeches, where she emotionally asked world leaders, “How dare you!” accusing them of stealing her dreams and failing future generations by not acting swiftly enough on climate change.
In September 2019, millions of people participated in climate strikes across the world, making it the largest climate strike in history, inspired by Greta’s movement.
2020 made it difficult for her to actively pursue her goals due to COVID-19. She still she used ‘Digital Activism during this difficult phase. Greta shifted her activism online, continuing to raise awareness and hold virtual climate strikes. Despite the pandemic, her message remained consistent about the need for urgent climate action. 6. In 2021 – COP26, Greta participated in COP26 in Glasgow, leading protests outside the event, and delivering speeches criticizing the lack of meaningful action by political leaders, calling it “blah blah blah.”
She highlighted the gap between promises and actual progress in fighting climate change.
7. Fridays for Future Movement.Throughout 2019-2021, Greta continued to lead the Fridays for future movement, inspiring millions of young people across the world to protest and demand climate action from governments.
The movement became global, with regular strikes in major cities.
8.January 2022 saw Greta, alongside other activists, began advocating for legal accountability on environmental issues. She participated in discussions about the potential for lawsuits against governments and corporations for failing to act on climate.
It underlines her keen awareness and capability to use all possible solutions to help the environment. She rarely lost her communication streak. She remained active in her advocacy, using social media to amplify the message of environmental justice and engage with global leaders through conferences, interviews, and digital platforms.
9. 2023 saw her picking up the fossil fuel issue and campaigning for Fossil Fuel Divestment. Greta campaigned for governments and organizations to divest from fossil fuels and to adopt renewable energy. She has done so much since her first school time campaign started outside Swedish parliament in 2018.
She published her book “The Climate Book” in 2022, which compiled essays and insights from leading climate scientists, activists, and experts, advocating for urgent climate action.
Her role in these turbulent times is becoming more defined and an all-inclusive one. The thinking and neat expressions are reflected now in measured words. The acutely felt question is whether the political fraternity can accommodate environmental restrictions in its development & welfare, trade & commerce policy drives? The generation that is in power and politics presently is the predecessor generation. In two or three years, she will be amongst many nation builders, politicians, industrialists, thinkers and influencers who are of her own generation that is brought up on the staple diet of sustainable development since their student days. This is a clash of generations. The new, right-inclined governments in many countries are headed by powerful politicians with mass support, will their future thinking accommodate principles that rise above fierce nationalism, international boundaries , groupism, and narrow sectarian view and vision will be tested by approaching times and Greta Thunberg!
